David Crow - Healing & Environment PDF Print E-mail
David Crow

David Crow earned his initial accreditation from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1984, and after several years of clinical herbology and acupuncture practice in the US journeyed to Nepal to study Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine with traditional doctors in Kathmandu. His book In Search of the Medicine Buddha documents the story of these internships and his awakening to the environmental destruction imperiling the medicinal plants on which these ancient medical systems depend.

Through writing, teaching, and activism, David promotes grassroots healthcare systems based on community herbal gardens, such as The Learning Garden in Los Angeles, which he co-founded and helped develop into one of America's largest and most successful school gardening experiments.

He also founded the aromatic essence firm Floracopeia as an international fair trade enterprise and educational knowledge base to help promote botanical medicines as solutions to the interrelated global problems of poverty, healthcare scarcity, environmental destruction, and loss of ethnobotanical knowledge.

David is also an experienced teacher of Vipassana meditation , which he uses to awaken students to the essential biological unity of the body and the ecological surround. He will be helping USW develop Chautauqua-like performing arts & aromatic education tours, organic medicinal farming curricula, and herbal essence production skills.

Pannalal Patel - Village Outreach & Organic Ag PDF Print E-mail
Pannalal PatelConfidant, ally and brother in organic arms, Sri Pannalal Patel was born into an ancient Mewari farming family and enriched his traditional knowledge trove with a 9-year education & development fellowship at Udaipur's renowned Shikshantar alternative education NGO. This internship eventually led him to a Bill Mollison-run permaculture certification session in Zambia and deep insights into the global significance of local initiatives that become contagious and inspire.

Ecologically committed Panallal has worked to spread the wisdom of organic grain, vegetable and herb farming among Udaipur's farmers and urban youth. He has also built rainwater harvesting units in Udaipur and is currently campaigning to raise ecological awareness within the surrounding panchayats (village administrative councils).

As a community educator he has helped produce local folk culture documentaries; hosted youth workshops on globalization & localization; organized children's art and theater events; and authored/edited 5 books on Mewari folklore that have been shared with nearly 2,000 families in 120 villages, as well as other communities working to regenerate their local languages.

Panallal is USW's go-to guy for regional agro-social issues and a bridge between our visiting experts and village leaders on the ground.

Günter Nitschke - Sustainable Architecture & Sensuous Design PDF Print E-mail

Gunter NitschkeGünter Nistchke is by training a renowned architect, scholar and landscape designer. He has taught at MIT, Princeton, UCLA and Kyoto's Seika University and written scores of monographs and books on historical, aesthetic and spiritual aspects of Asian architecture and design.

By passion and predilection, however, Günter is also an uproarious iconoclast, who has spent great stretches of life battling dogma and stupidity, and devoted his knowledge, skill and insights to sparking a redeeming new round of evolutionary advance. His work and wisdom have inspired USW planning from the outset, since his vision unites a love of laughter and sensuous beauty with an eco-empathic embrace of sustainable green tech. In addition to ongoing work at his Institute for East Asian Architecture & Urbanism in Kyoto, Günter has conceived a new initiative to open sustainable architecture departments in universities around the world and will be beginning pilot projects shortly in Bali and Nepal. He will be helping us apply those same green principles to our Udaipur constructions and gleefully dousing us with his scathing wit if our goody-goodness gets too far out of hand.

Piki Chappell - Music Magic & Show/Tech Design PDF Print E-mail
Piki Chappell

Piki Chappell has been a volcanic Theater 3.0 creative force for two decades now with a career stretching from San Francisco's rich underground art/music scene and Burning Man culture to the "cirque nouveau" renaissance of Montreal, Quebec. During his early West Coast years, Piki "the musician plus" churned out astonishing performances including pieces feauring his note-perfect inverted cello playing, flying pianos, and foot fretting a tuned 'musical' tightrope while playing it with a bow.

In Montreal he designed haunting new instruments and musical interludes for Cirque du Soleil shows, performed in many Cirque galas & premiers, and served for years as musical director of Circo de Bakuza. He has sung, DJed, and jammed with music greats around the world, and is currently turning his imaginative focus to Japan and India. He will be helping us design collaborative soundscapes for Udaipur performances and brilliant low-tech sensor arrays that allow dancers to trigger and "compose" their own music and light show accompaniment with their movements on the stage in real time.

Suresh Pillai - Roma/Gypsy Recognition & Renewal PDF Print E-mail

Suresh Pillai

Suresh Pillai recently finished a distinguished 3-year term as founding project head of the Diaspora Program at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, where he made a heroic effort to highlight the marvelous and painful history of India's Roma/gypsy people as they journeyed through the world. Suresh was originally educated for and excelled in geo-political journalism working as a correspondent in Delhi, the West Indies, Canada, the Middle East, and Serbia. During these years he also mastered the arts of documentary film working with international firms like HBO on Once More Removed and Dutch Television on coverage of Indian minorities in the Caribbean. He went on to produce and direct his own moving works on overseas Indian communities, including Purano Manush, his most recent documentary on the plight of Roma/Gypsies in Kosovo, Serbia. As a cultural historian, Suresh also created the Arikamedu Museum Gallery to document archeological evidence from the Arikamedu Pondicherry sites that established their connections with the Roman Empire in the pre-Christian era. He will be working with USW less as a curator and more as a catalyst, however, striving to create a new "living museum" paradigm that not only celebrates Roma/Gypsy history and culture, it will also offer them a collaborative stage to define themselves and express their own amazing gifts in their own voices to the outside world.

Masaki Ueshima - Design & Environment PDF Print E-mail
Masaki-san

If Japan ever gets around to creating a National Living Treasure award for dazzling polymaths of Japanese culture, Masaki Ueshima will be standing at the head of the candidate queue and no doubt laughing hilariously at the honor.  Gourmet Nihon-ryori chef, ikebana master, accomplished potter, and aesthetic savant, Masaki is also a terribly charming and funny gentleman. While we treasure him as a friend and ally for all his many gifts and enthusiasms, we introduce him here for his rather astonishing talents as a virtuouso Japanese garden designer.

Give Masaki a few months, a source of wild rocks and reasonably comprehensive nursery and he can turn the most prosaic stretch of earth into a bonsai vision of paradise. The brief slide show below presents a very informal sampling of some of his more recent work in the US, Canada and Japan. He has just been introduced to the permaculture philosophy and has offered to help us develop our site in that spirit if we can find an interested and interesting permaculture design partner.

Mariyo Yagi - Design & Environment PDF Print E-mail
Mariyo-sanEver since she first won recognition as a 3-year-old artistic prodigy in Japan's leading national newspapers, Mariyo Yagi has blazed a brilliant and original trail through the aesthetic landscape of our world. Through her writings, designs and spectacular and/or soulful environmental monuments, Mariyo has given bold new dimensions and a fresh philosophy to the concept of public art. Though expert in the use of water, stone and earthworks, nawa or rope is her medium and metaphor of choice. In Mariyo's eye and hands, nawa re-presents the most critical themes of existence - unity from diversity, the conjugated strength of singular achievements in traditions' continuity, and the spirals of semi-sentient energy that inform reality and reduplicate from DNA helixes to galactic swirls.

Mariyo-san is not only a sage and visual poet, she is also a scholar, licensed landscape engineer and skilled construction contractor who personally directs creation of her most monumental works.  In Udaipur she will be collaborating with Masaki Ueshima et al to craft a living environment that offers sanctuary, insight and a sensually provocative surround.
